Tips For Moving With Young Children

Moving to Los Angeles from elsewhere can be a quite a process. Moving is usually not something we look forward to because of all of the logistics involved. If you are moving to LA with young children, it can be even more challenging.

I am here to tell you that there are ways to mitigate the stress that comes with moving with young kids.

Organize

Starting a few weeks to a month in advance, throw away or donate things you don’t need or want any more. We all have things that are sitting there unused and unnoticed until the day we start moving. If you do just that, it’ll save you a lot of time and energy later.

Get Help

Most likely you’ve told friends and family you’re moving to LA. I’ll bet at least some of them have offered to help in some way. Let them. Someone may be willing to watch the kids while you start packing. Others may want to actually help you pack. Time will go by much faster if you allow others to help you.

Let Your Kids Help

Involving your kids in this endeavor can prove to be useful. Instead of whining and moaning about the move, they could be packing up their own things. This will give them a sense of control, which is crucial to helping them adjust to the move.

Label

I strongly urge you to label boxes appropriately and adding like-items together. For instance, label your dishware as fragile and for the kitchen. That way, when you get to your destination, you don’t need to figure out where things should go.

Moving is a big life change so don’t underestimate how it’ll affect you and your kids. It can be one of the most stressful time periods of someone’s life, so try to be kinder to yourself and your little ones. It will help make the transition period go by more smoothly.
