Transportation

Los Angeles is known for a lot of things, and needing a car is one of them. If you are fortunate enough to be able to afford one, LA is the place for you. Can you get around without a car? Technically, but it could take you hours and our public transportation system still leaves something to be desired.

Freeways

It seems like the freeways in LA are always jam-packed, especially during rush hour. The 101 and 405 freeways are pretty well known for bumper-to-bumper traffic. Learn to use side streets and canyon roads to get to certain places. For example, many of us cut across the San Fernando Valley to the ocean by using Topanga Canyon Blvd. Not only is it convenient, the windy roads take you through breathtaking scenery.

Beaches

If you’re like most Angelenos, you’ll think more about the beach than you’ll actually go there. That is true for most of the year. Summer is a different story. When the temperature is in the 90s or more, all 10 million people seem to rush over to the coast and make parking non-existent or expensive if you use a private lot.

Parking

Parking can be a huge issue, especially in downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood. Be aware of street signs telling you where you can park, where you cannot park, and when you can park. It can take some getting used to as you drive around and around until you find something.
